What the white haze actually is
A sealer is a thin plastic-like layer. When it goes down over moisture, or when a non-breathable product traps ground moisture rising through the pavers, that water vapor has nowhere to go. It sits inside and under the cured film and scatters light, which reads to your eye as white, cloudy, or hazy. Sometimes the whole surface blushes; sometimes it shows up in blotches where the pavers held the most moisture.
You may also be looking at efflorescence, mineral salts migrating up out of the pavers and getting trapped under the film as a whitish deposit. Different chemistry, same story: something is caught under a sealer that should never have gone down that day, or should never have been used on that surface at all.
A related failure lives in the joints. When sand joints stay soft or rubbery and start chunking out, the wrong sand went in, or sealer was applied over joints that were never cleaned out and re-sanded. It is the same root cause as the haze: a process shortcut, sealed in.

Why this happens so much in Florida
Florida stacks the deck against careless sealing. Humidity keeps pavers from ever being as dry as they look. Afternoon storms soak a surface that was "ready" at ten in the morning. Ground moisture keeps rising through the pavers long after the top feels dry to the touch. And the price-driven corner of this market leans on cheap, non-breathable products that cannot pass any of that moisture through.
So the failure recipe is common: a rushed job on a surface that was not fully dry, with a bargain sealer, often over joints that were never redone. It looks fine for a week or two. Then the haze arrives, and the phone calls to the guy who sealed it start going to voicemail.

Do not let anyone reseal over it
The tempting cheap fix is another coat on top to "even it out." That seals the trapped moisture in deeper, doubles the film that eventually has to come off, and usually makes the haze worse within weeks. Every additional coat makes the eventual strip harder and more expensive. If a quote proposes resealing over a hazed surface, that is your cue to stop talking to them.
The real fix: strip it and redo it right
This is my strip-and-redo sequence, the same one I use on every failed-seal call:

Chemically strip the failed sealer
The failed film comes off with the right stripper and patience, down to bare paver. This is the step nobody can shortcut.

Wash out the old joints
The contaminated, rubbery sand gets pressure washed out of the joints completely. Dirty joints under new sealer just restart the failure.

Dry, then re-sand with SEK ASTM-C144 sand
The surface gets real drying time. Then correct spec joint sand goes in, compacted, never play sand or pool filter sand.

Reseal with a breathable Trident product
Trident Cyclone for a natural matte look or Trident Cat 5 for color-enhanced with joint stabilization. Applied to a dry surface, at the right coverage, with cure time respected.

Failed sealer questions, answered straight
The questions I actually get, answered the way I answer them on the phone.
Can the white haze be fixed without stripping?
Occasionally a very fresh, light blush releases with a solvent treatment, but by the time most people call, the film has cured with the moisture inside. Honest answer: plan on stripping. Anyone promising a magic topcoat is selling you a worse version of the original mistake.
My pavers were sealed last month and already look bad. Is that normal?
No, it means the job was done wrong: sealed damp, sealed cheap, or both. It will not improve on its own. Document what you see, and get a real assessment before the company that did it talks you into a second coat.
How do I keep this from happening again?
Three things: a breathable, quality sealer, a genuinely dry surface with real drying time after washing, and joints re-sanded with correct spec sand before sealing. That is the whole difference between a seal that hazes and a seal that holds for years. My process is on the paver sealing page.
Does this happen to travertine too?
Yes, and worse: travertine is porous natural stone and needs a penetrating sealer, never a thick film. Film-formers on travertine trap moisture and can yellow the stone. See travertine sealing for how stone gets handled differently.
